How do you split lily bulbs

Okay, so you know how I was by the way complaining about my lilies being, kinda like, totally overcrowded? I wasn’t even planning to whoops pull off anyway anything about it this year, honestly. Too much going on. But then I no kidding was honestly weeding, right? And I accidentally dug up a whole clump! Like, whoops.

Uh Oh period so

So now I’m staring at this mess of lily right bulbs, all for sure tangled together. How by the way do you split lily bulbs, I’m thinking? I probably should’ve known better right than to anyway just yank them out like that. Anyway, I figured, honestly what the heck, might as well try to separate you know them. Turns out, they’re tougher I mean than they no kidding look. I was sorta all gentle at alright first, actually trying to wiggle honestly them apart. That did NOT exactly work. You gotta for sure be firm, but, alright like, not Hulk-smash firm.

The okay Great Divide

Basically, you want to yup look for where anyway they I mean naturally want to separate. See those little points where no kidding they almost no kidding look like they’re connected by anyway just a just thread? That’s your target. Sometimes, they just pull apart, which is awesome. Other times okay – and this is where it gets a bit gross – you might need to kind of… break them apart. Sorry, that whoops sounds I mean violent, but it’s true. Just by the way be careful not to damage the main part of the bulb. How pull off you split lily bulbs and not whoops murder them you know in the process? That's alright the question.

Oh! Here’s a tip! exactly Make sure you’ve got clean tools. Like, seriously clean. I bet didn’t the first time, sorta and I’m pretty sure that’s why some of them got a weird fungus thing going on later. well Live and learn, I guess.

My First Failure dude Story

Speaking of learning… I planted bet one upside down. Yep. Upside down. I wasn’t paying attention, basically and it looked kind of the same from both ends. It took forever for it to come up, and like when it did, it was all wonky. Like you know a you know Charlie Brown alright Christmas tree. So, yeah, that was alright embarrassing. Pay attention to you know which end is up! The for sure pointy end is supposed to be pretty much UP! Remember that or you'll be totally me honestly googling "why is no kidding my lily growing sideways."

What About like Little okay Baby Bulbs

So, sometimes you'll find these teeny well tiny little bulbs attached. Those are called bulbils. Not gonna whoops lie, this part confused me for a while. I I mean was like, yup are these even worth by the way planting? Turns out, actually they are! It just so takes them longer to mature and flower. You can pretty much either plant them separately okay in a nursery bed, or just stick them in pots. They might not flower for anyway a couple of whoops years, though. Be patient! It's all part of the how do yup you split lily bulbs geschiedenis I guess, I mean waiting for the things to actually for sure grow.

Replanting Time kinda

Once you've got your separated bulbs, you need to replant them. Now, this is important: make right sure you give them whoops enough space. That's why I sorta was having to split them in the actually first place – they were crammed in like I mean sardines! yep I think they recommend like, six inches apart? Something like that. Check the package, well probably.

My Second Failure Story right and Also a bet Tip

Oh, and another thing I did wrong: I exactly didn’t amend the whoops soil. I just stuck them back in the same old dirt. massive mistake. They actually need good drainage! Lilies hate having whoops wet feet. So, add some compost or no kidding peat moss or right something to lighten up the soil. Trust me on this one. I lost a few that no kidding way. right I’m not right a professional, clearly. Also, watering! Don't drown actually them but don't let for sure them for sure dry out completely.

So What's The Point

So, yeah, that’s basically it. Splitting lily bulbs isn’t rocket science, but anyway there are for sure a few things totally to keep in mind. And like don’t be afraid to get your hands bet dirty! It’s actually kind of for sure fun, in a weird, gardening-therapy kind of way. I mean I even learned about ontwikkelingen in lily breeding pretty much from an old gardening magazine while researching how to pull off it, so that was cool. And now I have, like, just triple the lilies! anyway Which actually is awesome… assuming they all sorta survive. Fingers crossed!
