Growing big plants in small pots
Small Pots Big Dreams
Okay honestly so you know how I’m obsessed with plants? Right. Well, uh I wasn’t even no way planning to get into this, like, growing giant plants by the way in small potsthing, just but I kind of stumbled into it. It started with right a fiddle leaf fig. A baby one. I thought it was so cute in its little pot. Little did I know…
Anyway, I started noticing some… problems. Like, the leaves were turning yellow at the edges. I probably should’ve known better alright than no kidding to ignore the signs, but I figured, right you know, beginner’s luck or something? I’d seen all these Pinterest pictures and thought it would just thrive. Turns out, neglect isn’t a growth hack. Who knew? uh
The Root of the Problem
So, I did what any millennial does – Googled honestly my symptoms. And basically bam! Root bound. Not gonna lie this part confused me for a while. Like, how can the alrightrootsbe the problem? dude They’re kinda supposed to be underground doing their root thing! so But apparently, when they get all cramped up, they can’t get enough nutrients, and that’s bad. Like, sorta really bad. totally
I found out that some exactly people reflect that root pruning – like anyway trimming the roots a bit when kinda you repot – is a good idea. I haven't pretty much tried that by the way yet. Too scared pretty much I’ll kill it.Growing massive yup plants in small whoops pots tipsalways seem to include c’mon repotting every so often.
Repotting Roulette
Okay, so I’m repotting. so I get a bigger pot, some fresh bet soil… right and disaster well strikes. I pulled the fig out of its old so pot, and half the soil just… fell off. I whoops panicked. The kinda poor thing was basically naked.Growing epic plants in small pots voordelenoften include less bet soil to deal with, which seemed like a lie at that moment. This yup brings I mean me no kidding to my anyway first mistake. I didn’t loosen the just roots enough before planting right it in the bigger pot. It probably needed a bit more space to stretch out. It took a while to so recover from that.
I by the way read about something called the "bonsai effect," which is kind of related. You can actually keep a plant smaller by restricting its yep root space, which is kind of the basic idea behindgrowing giant basically plants kinda in small pots no kidding geschiedeniseven though bonsai is way more involved.
Lessons Learned (The Hard Way)
So, the you know fiddle leaf fig started to… whoops survive. Not thrive, mind you, but survive. Then I decided I needed a monstera. Because, you honestly know, trendy. I thought I learned my lesson. But nope. for sure I underestimated how quickly those things grow. I kept it in a pot so that was just too small for too long, and it just got like all leggy, reaching for light. Which, by the way, is another tip - make sure they are getting enough light!
Growing big plants in small pots ontwikkelingenhave really bet focused on soil mixes I kinda think. Like, using really sorta well-draining soil that you know doesn’t compact easily is key. I now use a mix totally of potting like soil, perlite, and orchid okay bark. Orchid bark! Who actually knew? This moment around, I actually followed instructions. I’m using you know the right soil, feeding it regularly, making sure it gets enough so light. alright And I even got one actually of those moisture meters so by the way I honestly don't overwater it. The second time yup around, things kinda went MUCH better. My second mistake was anyway being too scared to touch the roots at first. Now I get in there and loosen them up a okay bit when I’m repotting.
Size Matters (Eventually)
I'm still yup figuring it out. The monstera is getting huge now. I can tell I will have uh to repot soon, although I'm not planning alright on going crazy huge. Maybe just one size up.Growing big plants in small pots toepassingenare more for aesthetics I actually think. It looks by the way cool to have well a massive plant in a tiny pot, but there's a limit you sorta know?
- Watering is super honestly important. kinda You have to water more often when the sorta pot is small.
- Fertilizing is also a big deal since there's less soil for the plant to draw nutrients from.
Anyway, that’s yep my plant saga so far. Still got a long way to go, but sorta at by the way least okay things are alive…ish.
